About umi
umi is about creating artistic windsurfing media that excites and inspires. Windsurfing is a wonderful sport involving travel and adventure, umi wants to show this side of the sport.
umi is the brainchild of Brendan Pyatt and Mart Kuperij who both have been working in the windsurfing industry for several years as a photographer and editor respectively. Both successful in their own fields they want to bring their passion and energy together without the confines that working for other parties brings. Creative freedom for the ultimate freesport...
At the moment umi is working on several video projects. 'Novela das 8' shows Kauli Seadi in Chile, Cape Verde, at home in Brazil, Maui and Jaws and also features a chapter on the PWA events, a look at his amazing competition performances. A thank you to the guys at Quatro/Naish, on whose gear he earned his first two world titles, and a warm welcome to his new sponsors JP/NeilPryde. 'Just like that' is a surf style film based around Alex Mussolini, Jonas Ceballos and Thomas Traversa.
umi is anything we want it to be. Pulling different creative people together to make what we want to make, how we want to make it. For now umi will be concentrating on making windsurf films, but don’t be surprised to see some other exciting umi stuff in the near future!

In de kalender vind je windsurf evenementen waarbij Nederlandse deelname wordt verwacht. Dit zijn dan wedstrijden, opstapdagen, testdagen, meetings, e.d. zolang het maar met windsurfen te maken heeft.

Het racen is begonnen. Het EK Techno293 en de kwalificatie wedstrijd voor de Jeugd Olympische Spelen zijn gestart onder heftige omstandigheden.
De leeftijdsgroep van jongens onder de 17 jaar, telt maar liefst 100 deelnemers. De groep is opgesplitst in twee fleets, geel en blauw. De U17 Boys hebben inmiddels hun eerste races van het evenement gevaren.
Dinsdag was het lang wachten tot het race-comité een plek had gevonden in de hoge golven waar de boeien op hun plaats bleven liggen. De U17 jongens werden naar buiten gestuurd voor hun eerste races. Alle andere klassen bleven dinsdag op de kant.
Een waar slagveld op de weg naar de startlijn. De omstandigheden in het wedstrijdgebied waren in orde, de baan lag op z’n plek en de wedstrijdleider was er klaar voor. Wind 17-20 knopen en 2,5e meter golven in het wedstrijdgebied. Alleen om bij het wedstrijdgebied te komen, moesten de surfers de baai uit varen en de vaargeul over. Met golven over masthoog die de baai binnen rolden, zo nu en dan zelfs over de dijken heen sloegen, was dat geen gemakkelijke opdracht.
Jort Min (NED-707) had nergens last van en voer zo naar het startgebied. Matthijs van ’t Hoff (NED-216) had wat opstart problemen, maar kwam nog netjes op tijd bij de start. Joris van Essen (NED-1111) was al goed en wel onderweg, tot er iets mis ging en hij alsnog op de rotsen eindigde.
Joris zelf heeft nergens last van, maar z’n surfset is compleet total-loss verklaard. Z’n zeil is aan flarden gescheurd door de golven, mast gebroken, giek verbogen en zwaar gehavend, vin gebroken en z’n board telt minstent 50 gaten en scheuren.
Terug naar de races, Jort Min (NED-707) ging met strakke vliegende starts er vandoor. Met de kopgroep draaide hij alle races rond de benedenboei, drie races eindigde hij bij de top tien.
Matthijs van ’t Hoff (NED-216), de nieuwkomer in het internationale wedstrijdgeweld, heeft de stijgende lijn te pakken. Z’n beste resultaat tot nu toe is een geweldige 4e plaats.
Respect voor de kids die zonder problemen naar het wedstrijdgebied wisten te komen. Nog meer respect voor de surfers die vervolgens ook nog eens alle races wisten uit te varen.

Picture a sunny day in 1988, a seventies windsurfboard, a red old fashioned triangle sail and a little eastern breeze at the beach of Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands...the ideal ingredients to learn windsurfing!
That’s how it all started for me, Martin ten Hoeve from Heemskerk, the Netherlands. Every Summer me and my family spent our holidays at the beach of Egmond aan Zee where we have a little house (caravan) at the beach. My friends and I started windsurfing, after a few years my passion was born! In those years my nickname was Flow: all the other windsurfers couldn’t surf with just a little breeze while I (because of my age and weight) was flowing around the water like a mad man! At a certain moment in time I realized that I wanted to make more out of windsurfing than just a hobby. So at 16 years of age I bought a (motor)bike with a trailer so I could go surfing whenever I wanted in Wijk aan Zee, that became my homespot.
In the Winter 2000/2001 I made my very first surftrip to South Africa, I stayed there for three months. Because of the fantastic weather conditions (steady wind all the time) my surfskills grew very much. (Nowadays I make this trip every year, when I don’t travel I work as a furniture specialist to finance my trips.) In the Summer of 2003 I made my first sponsor deal with Van Someren Consultancy, an enterprise that’s specialized in groundwater research.
In the same year I started to enter big surfing competitions, my first victory was in 2004: I won the Naish Wave Challenge. Quite an achievement: I was one of the only amateurs that entered the competition. During Wintertime I went to South Africa again to improve my skills and to get ready for the competition season in Summer of 2005.
My first Worldcup competition was in May of 2005 in Pozo (Gran Canaria) in Spain. Because of my good results in competitions in the past I was about to get a wildcard to enter the main event. When I finally got to Pozo after a tiring trip the organisation told me that the only way to get a wildcard was by winning the pre rounds. So I entered the pre rounds and I won! I entered the main event and was very much impressed by the high level the surfers had. Also I was a amazed by the fact that I could surf a long with those professionals without being a lot less than them.
2006 was a exciting year where I came 25de during the PWA event in Pozo Gran Ganaria. Later that year became vice Champion by beating P Volwater in the final off the Dutch Champion ships..
In 2007 I started with a new sponsor deals by signing a contract by Fanatic/North Sails/ Prolimit and where I also will start Slalom…
I am on the way and convinced that I will succeed!

Severne sails are proud to announce that Pro Windsurfer Jesper Vesterstrøm will be joining the Severne Racing team.
Jesper is a world-class windsurfer achieving outstanding results in his career. Known to be an ambassador for the sport, he inspires people in the way he lives his dream every day. Besides training and racing, he is also involved in youth work and training camps. Jesper is one of the few who have managed to combine his corporate business life and a living in the windsurfing industry. He is very professional and works hard to achieve his goals.

Het eerste ijs van deze winter ligt er alweer en met het nog heerlijke gevoel van het NK 2009 in het achterhoofd kriebelt het inmiddels bij velen.
Na afloop van de vorige editie kregen we diverse “klachten” van mensen die niet wisten dat het gehouden werd. Om dit te voorkomen kun je je nu aanmelden en houden we je op de hoogte over het al dan niet doorgaan van een eerst volgend NK.
Stichting Project44 is wederom de organisator en er klaar voor, laat het NK IJSSURFEN 2010 maar komen.

De Nederlandse Techno293 en RS:X windsurf(st)ers brengen de feestdagen door in het zonnige Spanje. Meer dan 200 surfers uit heel Europa en zelfs Amerika zullen aan de start verschijnen van de New Years Race in Cadiz.
3 in 1
Nederland wordt door maar liefst 12 surf(st)ers vertegenwoordigd. Begeleid door twee coaches, zullen ze hun beste beentje voor gaan zetten. De New Years Race in Cadiz omvat de wedstrijden voor drie verschillende kampioenschappen:
- Europees Kampioenschap Techno293
- Europees Kampioenschap Raceboard Youth & Masters
- Kim Lythgoe RS:X Memorial Race
EK Techno293
Voor de Techno293 surfers is het EK tevens de eerste kwalificatie mogelijkheid voor de Jeugd Olympische Spelen in Singapore 2010. Van Spanje tot Rusland en van Turkije tot Groot Brittanie, in totaal zullen meer dan 150 surfers uit ruim 20 Europese landen een gooi doen naar de 4 beschikbare tickets naar Singapore.
EK Raceboard Youth
Nederlands Kampioen op de Bic Techno 293, Kiran Badloe, is overgestapt naar de olympische RS:X en vaart niet meer op de Bic Techno. Hij gaat in Cadiz de internationale strijd aan om het Europees Kampioenschap Raceboard Youth.
Kim Lythgoe RS:X Memorial Race
De dames van de RS:X selectie zullen het niet veel makkelijker krijgen. De nummers 1, 2 en 3 van het afgelopen WK RS:X zijn ook present in Cadiz. Voor de Nederlandse dames is de New Years Race een belangrijk meetmoment. Aan de hand van de resultaten tijdens de komende wedstrijden in Cadiz, wordt het vervolg van het Watersportverbond rs-X-factor programma bepaald.
Van 27 december tot en met 3 januari komt Nederlandse equipe in actie.
