About umi

umi is about creating artistic windsurfing media that excites and inspires. Windsurfing is a wonderful sport involving travel and adventure, umi wants to show this side of the sport.

umi is the brainchild of Brendan Pyatt and Mart Kuperij who both have been working in the windsurfing industry for several years as a photographer and editor respectively. Both successful in their own fields they want to bring their passion and energy together without the confines that working for other parties brings. Creative freedom for the ultimate freesport...

At the moment umi is working on several video projects. 'Novela das 8' shows Kauli Seadi in Chile, Cape Verde, at home in Brazil, Maui and Jaws and also features a chapter on the PWA events, a look at his amazing competition performances. A thank you to the guys at Quatro/Naish, on whose gear he earned his first two world titles, and a warm welcome to his new sponsors JP/NeilPryde. 'Just like that' is a surf style film based around Alex Mussolini, Jonas Ceballos and Thomas Traversa.

umi is anything we want it to be. Pulling different creative people together to make what we want to make, how we want to make it. For now umi will be concentrating on making windsurf films, but don’t be surprised to see some other exciting umi stuff in the near future!

Biografie Martin ten Hoeve

Picture a sunny day in 1988, a seventies windsurfboard, a red old fashioned triangle sail and a little eastern breeze at the beach of Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands...the ideal ingredients to learn windsurfing!

That’s how it all started for me, Martin ten Hoeve from Heemskerk, the Netherlands. Every Summer me and my family spent our holidays at the beach of Egmond aan Zee where we have a little house (caravan) at the beach. My friends and I started windsurfing, after a few years my passion was born! In those years my nickname was Flow: all the other windsurfers couldn’t surf with just a little breeze while I (because of my age and weight) was flowing around the water like a mad man! At a certain moment in time I realized that I wanted to make more out of windsurfing than just a hobby. So at 16 years of age I bought a (motor)bike with a trailer so I could go surfing whenever I wanted in Wijk aan Zee, that became my homespot.

In the Winter 2000/2001 I made my very first surftrip to South Africa, I stayed there for three months. Because of the fantastic weather conditions (steady wind all the time) my surfskills grew very much. (Nowadays I make this trip every year, when I don’t travel I work as a furniture specialist to finance my trips.) In the Summer of 2003 I made my first sponsor deal with Van Someren Consultancy, an enterprise that’s specialized in groundwater research.

In the same year I started to enter big surfing competitions, my first victory was in 2004: I won the Naish Wave Challenge. Quite an achievement: I was one of the only amateurs that entered the competition. During Wintertime I went to South Africa again to improve my skills and to get ready for the competition season in Summer of 2005.

dikke backside cutback (2)

My first Worldcup competition was in May of 2005 in Pozo (Gran Canaria) in Spain. Because of my good results in competitions in the past I was about to get a wildcard to enter the main event. When I finally got to Pozo after a tiring trip the organisation told me that the only way to get a wildcard was by winning the pre rounds. So I entered the pre rounds and I won! I entered the main event and was very much impressed by the high level the surfers had. Also I was a amazed by the fact that I could surf a long with those professionals without being a lot less than them.

2006 was a exciting year where I came 25de during the PWA event in Pozo Gran Ganaria. Later that year became vice Champion by beating P Volwater in the final off the Dutch Champion ships..

In 2007 I started with a new sponsor deals by signing a contract by Fanatic/North Sails/ Prolimit and where I also will start Slalom…

I am on the way and convinced that I will succeed!

Face your fears, live your dreams! See you out there on the water!

    Life Down under

Two months ago I had just got in Perth after a mammoth 3 days long trip. I was testing a new way of flying to Australia as it's getting more and more difficult to get there with windsurf equipment. Excess luggage turned out to be really cheap for the 90 kg of boardbags indeed, and the trip another very long story.

To make it short, I first had to drive (well, my Mum had to drive me...) the 3 hours to Zurich airport as there were no flight departing from where I live. In Zurich I was told that my passport, which was a little ripped on the side, wouldn't be accepted in Thailand and I had to go and get a new one done. Good start...

My flight was going from Zurich to Bangkok via Germany, and after a 24 hours stopover in Thailand it was going from Bangkok to Singapore, and finally from Singapore to Perth. What I didn't know was that I had to pick up all my bags and check them in again every time. Luckily Asian people are very kind, and the whole airport staff, including policemen and customs police, ended up getting involved in carrying my boardbags around. After 60 hours of travelling I actually made it to Perth, where the sun, wind and waves were waiting.

October is still early in the season, which means we get a lot of different kind of weather. It can be glassy and very hot one day, and raining with howling westerly winds the following day. I like it a lot as we get to do different things and sail lots of different conditions and spots.

There is always a place to windsurf here, whatever the wind direction. So the first few weeks I got to spend a lot of time on the water, freestyling and wave sailing. One of the best day so far was a Saturday in Lancelin, with a really strong seabreeze and half mast to logo high waves.

    Gero3

I love it when we get such good conditions over the weekend because every one is there. We ended up sailing with quite a few mates, all of them ripping, getting sick rides and big jumps. Scotty McKercher, Ben Severne, Simon Hurrey, and a few more of the guys were there. It's a great inspiration to sail with them, I love it. We had a similar day on the river with strong westerly wind, a lot of friends were there as well, and everyone was loving it and trying lots of moves. You get these special days every now and then when the atmosphere and everything else is just perfect. These are the days you remember for a very long time.

Western Australia is such a unique place, for the windsurfing, the surfing, the beach and the sea, and lots more of course, but also for the lifestyle. Life here is relaxed and simple, it's all about enjoying it. And that's what people do!

My van is packed and as full as it can possibly get, and we're literally about to hit the road.

We're heading up north as the forecast is really good, with swell and wind for as far as we can see. We'll stop in Geraldton for a few days first, then if all goes to plan we should be going to Gnaraloo...

    What a life!

Point 7 weer in Nederland verkrijgbaar!
